The Oscars are over, and these are the films to watch first

With the 95th Academy Awards coming to a close, the results are in and Oscar-winning films are set to open in theaters across Korea in the coming weeks.
 
“Everything Everywhere All at Once,” the hit story of multicultural immigrants that won seven Oscars, will still be available for viewing at certain cinemas in Korea, and other films with trophies and nominations such as “The Banshees of Inisherin” (2022), “The Fabelmans” (2022) and “Tár” (2022) can be viewed at select theaters.
 
Here is a full list of what to watch and where.
 
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2022) won a total of seven Oscars, making the biggest sweep at the 95th Academy Awards held at Dolby Theater in Los Angeles on March 15. Starring Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis, the film won Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing and Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis and Best Director for the director-duo Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert.
 
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” opened in Korean theaters last year and was distributed in wide-release, and small theaters are still screening the film. Emu Cinema in Jongno District, central Seoul, Laika Cinema in Seodaemun District, western Seoul, and Deosup Art Cinema in Nowon District, northern Seoul, are screening the film until the end of March.
 
The dialogue for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” frequently shifts between English, Mandarin and Cantonese, and Korean theaters provide subtitles in Korean for each language.
 
Next up is the Irish black comedy film “The Banshees of Inisherin,” which is about two former best friends who get into a rough patch, to put it lightly. It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor for Colin Farrell and Best Supporting Actor for Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan. “The Banshees of Inisherin” is currently screening in Korea at CGV, Lotte Cinema and MegaBox branches across Seoul and other cities including Incheon, Daegu, Daejeon and Busan.
 
“The Fabelmans,” Steven Spielberg’s latest autobiographical family drama, also cannot be missed. Nominated for Best Picture and Best Actress for Michelle Williams, “The Fabelmans” will open in Korea on March 22. The three largest multiplexes CGV, Lotte Cinema and MegaBox will all screen the film.
 
Another Best Picture nominee worth looking out for is the Cate Blanchett-led “Tár,” which opened in Korean theaters on Feb. 22. Large multiplexes including CGV and Lotte Cinema, as well as arthouse cinemas including Art Nine Cinema in Dongjak District, southern Seoul, Cinecube Gwanghwamun in Jongno District and Arthouse Momo in Seodaemun District are screening “Tár.”
 
The Best Actor winner of the 95th Academy Awards was none other than Brendan Fraser for “The Whale” (2022), in director Darren Aronofsky’s new psychological drama. “The Whale” opened on March 1 in Korean theaters, and can be viewed at CGV, Lotte Cinema and MegaBox in Seoul districts such as those in Gangnam, Mapo, Jongno and Seocho.
 
Other films that won or were nominated for an Oscar this year were “Aftersun” (2022), for which lead actor Paul Mescal received the Best Actor nomination, and “All Quiet on the Western Front” (2022), which won the Best International Feature Film award.
 
“Aftersun,” the summer coming-of-age drama from director Charlotte Wells, can be viewed at Art Nine Cinema, Arthouse Momo and Film Forum in Seodaemun District.
 
“All Quiet on the Western Front” is not currently screening in Korea as it already opened in domestic theaters last year, but can be rented or streamed online through services such as Naver On, Watcha and Netflix.
