The AMEC (AmbroseMatilda English Connection) competition, organized by AMMC, concluded successfully on June 17th as a commemoration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Korea and Canada in 2023. The competition featured two distinct divisions: an international division and a domestic division, with the judging conducted through absolute evaluation. Out of the numerous participants, a total of 68 individuals, comprising 13 international contestants and 55 domestic contestants, advanced to the finals.
A panel of esteemed judges, comprised of professors from St. Mark’s College at UBC and Professor Myung-Hee Kim from Hanyang University in Korea, assessed the presentations. Among the judges, Dr. Gerry Turcotte, President of St. Mark’s College, the sole Catholic University in Vancouver, expressed genuine awe at the passion, remarkable skills, and impressive fluency in English displayed by the Korean youth who participated in the competition.
The director of AMMC, Matilda Kim, joyfully celebrated that the competition drew a successful close, despite being the first of its kind. Grateful to the AMMC winners and sponsors, Matilda eagerly announced plans to compile the winning pieces into a commemorative book entitled “2023 AM Story”. The book is set to be unveiled at the 2023 Korea-Canada Diplomatic Relations 60th Anniversary Dinner Concert at the Grand Intercontinental Hotel in Korea on September 9th. One of the winners will deliver a speech, representing the collective voice of the participants.
Furthermore, the event will be hosted by Cha Hae-ri, a renowned announcer from SBS and YTN, who also serves as the representative of Parastar Entertainment and appears on the SBS variety show “The Girls Who Hit the Goal”. Notably, the event will also be attended by esteemed guests, including Canadian Senator Yonah Martin, Bulgarian Honorary Consul Ron Suh, and Korean Honorary Consul Gerald Chipeur. As a gesture of honour, these guests have received an official invitation from the prestigious Korea National University of Arts (KNUA) and are scheduled to visit the institution on September 7th, preceding the main event.
